A BANK CLERK yesterday became the first person to be jailed for making obscene telephone calls after being convicted of causing grievous bodily harm.

Christopher Gelder, 25, was jailed for 18 months at Warrington Crown Court for terrorising Christine Howells, a customer of the bank, over a nine-month period.

Gelder, of Burton Green, Great Sutton, Ellesmere Port, was found guilty at Chester Crown Court in May, but sentence was adjourned until yesterday for reports.

Gelder, a clerk at the Royal Bank of Scotland's Runcorn branch, subjected Mrs Howells, 33, to obscene calls sometimes three to four times a week.
