Three men were injured yesterday in a large explosion at the Lawter Products BV factory at Grannagh, Waterford, in the Irish Republic. In the third accident at an Irish chemical works this month, the premises were badly damaged. One man had superficial injuries and two were transferred to a specialist burns unit in Cork, where one was described as critical.

The incident follows explosions at two plants in Co Cork on 6 and 7 August. Gardai said last night the cause of the explosion at the Waterford factory was not yet known.
