A BOY aged three died yesterday when a car driven by a schoolboy mounted the pavement and reversed into a group of three children.

The accident in Huyton, near Liverpool, could have been worse but for the quick thinking of a 15- year-old girl who threw a 10-month-old baby into a bush at the side of the road moments before she too was hit by the Polonez car.

Kevin Downes, of Huyton, died at the scene of extensive head injuries. Doctors at nearby Whiston Hospital found no injuries to the baby girl; the 15- year-old had a broken ankle and gashed thigh.

Last night police were questioning two boys, aged 14 and 15, about the incident.
