British Rail Standard Class 4 tank engine, No 80080, steaming away from Appleby station in Cumbria, on the Settle to Carlisle railway line (CORRECTED)
Monday 22 February 1993
A British Rail Standard Class 4 tank engine, No 80080, steaming away from Appleby station in Cumbria, on the Settle to Carlisle railway line. The locomotive, which was built in the early 1950s and was designed for use on suburban passenger services, is to be used to train a new generation of steam locomotive drivers and firemen so BR can keep pace with the demand for steam-hauled rides along the line, which narrowly escaped closure four years ago. For three weeks this summer BR will run twice-daily tourist excursions between Carlisle and Kirkby Stephen, at the foot of the Pennines, giving local people and enthusiasts a rare chance -at a flat fare of pounds 10 - to ride behind a steam engine.
A picture caption in Monday's Independent about a steam train on the Settle to Carlisle line said the service would run this summer. In fact the service began on 22 February for three weeks, calling at all stations between Carlisle and Kirkby Stephen. Details from British Rail on 0228 44711.
