Chess rest day leaves time for arguments

AFTER two games of the Fischer-Spassky chess match in Yugoslavia, ending in one win for Fischer and one draw, the players had a day-off yesterday, leaving the stage free for arguments about sanctions-busting.

Bobby Fischer has already been threatened by the US treasury department with a dollars 250,000 (pounds 126,000) fine and/or 10 years in prison for 'trading with the enemy', while the French are looking into Boris Spassky's involvement.

The match director, Janos Kobat, declared the need to draw a line between politics and chess. Fischer, playing his first competitive chess for 20 years, had to defend with accuracy in the early part of the second game but failed to convert later advantage into a win. Here are the full moves:
