A 63-year-old Bristol man has been charged in the 1984 murder of teenager Melanie Road.

Christopher John Hampton, of Bristol, has been charged with sexually abusing and murdering the 17-year-old on 9 June, 1984.

Mr Hampton, 63, is scheduled to appear at Bath Magistrates' Court on Monday, the Press Association reported, for allegedly stabbing the victim multiple times as she walked home from a night out in Bath with her friends.

A milkman making his morning rounds with his 10-year-old son found the teen’s body just hours after the killing.

A spokesman for Avon and Somerset investigators said: "We've been keeping Melanie's family fully updated on the progress of this investigation and they're aware of this latest development."

In 2014, detectives began DNA testing hundreds of men who were visiting the city while the murder occured.
