Police have launched an investigation after a dead body was discovered on a busy dual carriageway in Surrey.
Motorists travelling on the northbound carriageway of the A3 near Ripley spotted the lifeless victim at around 7.35pm yesterday before alerting the emergency services, Surrey Police said.
It is believed the body had been hit by a number of oblivious drivers who were unaware it was in the road.
The A3 was shut between Burnt Common and Ripley as detectives and scenes of crime officers examined the area and removed the body
A force spokesman said: "Officers were called to the Ripley junction of the motorway following reports from members of the public of a body on the carriageway just south of the BP service station.
"When the body was on the carriageway it was struck by a number of vehicles but it is likely the motorists did not realise what happened and did not stop at the scene."
Police appealed for any witnesses who were travelling along the northbound section of the A3 from 9pm yesterday to contact them.
