Birmingham man arrested at home on suspicion of preparing to join Isis in Syria

West Midlands police arrested the 18-year-old at his home in Hodge Hill at 7am

An 18-year-old man in Birmingham has been arrested on suspicion of preparing to travel to Syria with the intention of joining militant group Isis.

West Midlands Police said the man was arrested by officers from the Counter Terrorism Unit at his home in Hodge Hill at 7am on Monday, in a pre-planned and intelligence-led operation.

The arrest follows the detention of three teenagers on Sunday who were found in Turkey and held on suspicion of preparing terrorist acts.

The three – two 17-year-old boys from North West London and a 19-year-old man – were brought back to the UK on Sunday.

All three were arrested by the Metropolitan Police’s Counter Terrorism Command (CTC) and bailed while investigations continue.

West Midlands police added the Birmingham man was arrested at his home address on suspicion of preparing for terrorist acts, contrary to Section 5 of the Terrorism Act 2006.
