British police arrest five men under the Terrorism Act

By John Bingham, PA

Police arrested five men Tuesday in northern England in a pair of unrelated investigations of suspected terrorist offenses.

Two men, aged 25 and 29, were arrested in Halifax in West Yorkshire, 200 miles (320 kilometers) north of London, Metropolitan Police said.

Greater Manchester Police later announced three arrests of two men aged 24 and one aged 32 in an investigation of suspected support and facilitation for terrorism.

"At this stage, there is no intelligence of any planned terrorist activity in the U.K. and the arrests are part of an ongoing investigation," Greater Manchester Police said.

London's Metropolitan Police said the two men in Halifax were arrested on suspicion of committing, preparing or instigating acts of terrorism. They were expected to be transferred to London later Tuesday.

Police said they were searching the two houses in Halifax where the suspects were arrested, plus other premises in the area.
