Police say two women have suffered serious head injuries after scaffolding fell on them in a busy street in central London.

A man has been arrested following the incident on Eldon Street, which resulted in the closure of the road and a number of City buses to be diverted.

Michael Jarman, a City trader, tweeted that he saw “blood everywhere” at the scene outside Maplin Electronics near Liverpool Street.

He later told the Evening Standard: “There were a lot of people at the scene attending to the two ladies. One lady was sitting up right with a lot of blood around her face while the other lady was lying on the ground. She seemed in a lot of pain.

“Ambulance and police were quick to the scene but I had to leave, made my stomach turn. It was mayhem.”

The London Ambulance Service confirmed it had treated two women, both believed to be in their 50s, and that they were now being cared for at the Royal London Hospital.

A spokesperson for City of London police was not immediately available for comment.
