Two men have been arrested by counter-terror police on the M6 motorway as part of an investigation into Islamist-related terrorism.

One man, aged 33, was arrested on suspicion of being a member of, or supporting, a banned organisation, and of encouraging terrorism.

The second man, 42, was held on suspicion of assisting an offender. Both are being held in custody at a police station in central London.

It comes after nine men, including radical preacher Anjem Choudary, were arrested yesterday as part of an investigation into Islamist terrorism, bringing the total number of people detained in the operation to 11 over just two days.

Searches continue today at a number of addresses, including 18 across London and one in Stoke-on-Trent.

Scotland Yard said the arrests "are not in response to any immediate public safety risk" and are part of a continuing investigation into terrorism.
