The family of Kally Gilligan, a 15-year-old shot dead by her former boyfriend, paid tribute to her yesterday.

Kally, who was killed on the doorstep of the home in Salford she shared with her mother and two sisters, was in the middle of her GCSE exams. Her family described her as a "beautiful young lady".

Joshua Thompson, 18, her ex-boyfriend, turned the shotgun on himself after the killing and later died of his injuries. Witnesses reported hearing an argument at the terrace house before shots rang out.

Chief Superintendent Kevin Mulligan of Salford police said: "This is being treated as a murder inquiry. At this time it is suggested no one else is involved. This is a tragic set of circumstances and we are supporting both sets of families."
