Five teenagers arrested on suspicion of murdering 16-year-old boy in Jersey

Five teenagers, including three pupils at a fee-paying boys’ school, continue to be questioned on suspicion of murder after a 16-year-old boy was found dying on a country lane in Jersey.

Morgan Huelin, who was a pupil at the selective Victoria College attended by the three students suspected of killing him, died after being discovered unconscious by a female dog walker on Sunday morning following a party in an adjacent house.

The woman said that two of the teenagers subsequently arrested on suspicion of murdering Mr Huelin had been standing near to him when she found the teenager on the ground in the Trinity area of Jersey, north of the island’s capital of St Helier, shortly before 9.30am on Sunday.

The dog walker told the Jersey Evening Post: “I could tell there was something wrong. [The victim] was incredibly pale and I could see that he was gravely ill.

“I phoned for an ambulance. The operator was telling me what to do and I was instructing the boys and another member of the public. He was not breathing, his chest was not moving and there was no pulse.”

Mr Huelin, who had recently attended his school prom and posted photographs on social media with a female friend, died later in hospital. Jersey has a low crime rate and has not had a murder since 2005.

Pupils at Victoria College, a £4,500-a-year private school which describes itself as offering “an educational environment of the highest order”, were being offered counselling and the school’s flag flown at half-mast. Police said it was possible they may seek interviews with some of Mr Huelin’s classmates at the school, which has some 500 pupils aged 11 to 18 and counts horse racing pundit John McCririck and the actor Kenneth More among its alumni.

Detectives said that the teenager and the three pupils under arrest - two 16-year-olds and another aged 15 - had known each other.

The cause of the Mr Huelin’s death remained unknown ahead of a post-mortem examination due to take place on Tuesday.

Speaking before two more suspects were arrested, Detective Chief Superintendent Stewart Gull said: “We are treating the death as unexplained and based on the circumstances as they have presented to us three men have been arrested on suspicion of that murder.”
