Police searching for the missing 24-year-old student Karen Buckley have found human remains on a farm north of Glasgow.

A 21-year-old man who was detained for questioning on Wednesday has now been formally arrested in connection with Ms Buckley's death.

While formal identification is yet to take place, relatives have been informed of the discovery on the outskirts of Milngavie, six miles from the centre of Glasgow.

Ms Buckley, from Cork, was reported missing after a night out in the Scottish city on Saturday, and her disappearance sparked a four-day search involving a helicopter crew, search dogs and specialist police divers.

An occupational therapy student, Ms Buckley had arrived at the Sanctuary nightclub in Glasgow with friends at around 11.45pm. At around 1am she told friends she was going to the toilet, but failed to return and did not take her jacket.

CCTV from the club showed her leaving with a man in the early hours of Sunday, BBC News reported. Friends said that she had had a few drinks when she left them, but was not drunk.

Ms Buckley's handbag was found in Glasgow's Dawsholm Park on Tuesday, before the search moved to High Craigton farm in the north of the city.

Police search the flat in Dorchester Avenue, where Karen Buckley was last seen

Police had previously appealed for information about a grey car spotted on the road between 11am and 3pm on Monday.

And on Wednesday, officers searched a flat in Dorchester Avenue in Glasgow where the student was reportedly last seen.

Police said they had questioned a man who told them he had travelled with Ms Buckley to his flat, but that she had left at about 4am on Sunday.

Ms Buckley's family travelled from Ireland to Scotland on Tuesday. At a press conference, her mother Marian Buckley, 61, issued an appeal for information and said they were desperate to get their only daughter home safely.

A fundraising page set up by former classmates of Ms Buckley to help cover her family's expenses while they are in Scotland has raised more than £9,000.
