Police today arrested a man over the murder of two people on a canal boat.

Paramedics were called to the boat on the Grand Union Canal in Stoke Hammond, near Milton Keynes, early today amid reports that a man and woman were seriously injured.

A Thames Valley Police spokesman said the two people were pronounced dead at the scene, adding that a man in his 40s has been arrested on suspicion of murder following the deaths.

He said: "The ambulance service was contacted at 12.35am, following a report that a man and woman had been seriously injured on a boat along the Grand Union Canal. They have not at this time been formally identified. Their ages are yet to be confirmed.

"The circumstances surrounding this morning's incident are under investigation by detectives, who are not at this stage looking for anyone else in connection with their inquiry.

"The immediate area surrounding the boat remains cordoned off this afternoon.

"The arrested man remains in police custody at Milton Keynes police station."
