A car passenger was fighting for his life in hospital today after being hit by shots fired from another vehicle.

The victim, believed to be in his early 20s, was in a critical condition after suffering a gunshot wound in the Ladywood area of Birmingham yesterday, West Midlands Police said.

A police spokesman said the man, who was travelling in a Citroen Saxo, was shot at about 5.50pm in the Ladywood Middleway area.

Several roads in the area, including Ladywood Middleway and Icknield Port Road, were closed off to allow police to examine the scene of the shooting.

Anyone with information about the incident is urged to contact detectives at Birmingham's Rose Road police station on 0845 113 5000 or to call the Crimestoppers hotline, anonymously, on 0800 555 111.
