A young man has been shot dead on a pavement in an apparent motorbike ride-by hit.

Two people were arrested following the murder last night near Stockwell Tube station in south London.

The 24-year-old victim was standing in Clapham Road when he was gunned down as a dark-coloured motorcycle carrying two men approached him.

Nearby police officers were unable to stop the bike as it left the scene at speed, Scotland Yard said.

The suspects, aged 19 and 21, were arrested separately in Battersea in the early hours.

Detective Chief Inspector Neil Hutchison said: "I am appealing to anyone who may have witnessed this incident to come forward and speak to the police.

"I am particularly keen to hear from anyone who may have seen the motorcycle travelling at high speed towards the Battersea area."

A post-mortem examination was due to take place as police informed the victim's next of kin.

:: Detectives stressed that witnesses will be protected and asked anyone with information to call the incident room on 020 8247 4553 or Crimestoppers, anonymously, on 0800 555 111.
