Two men in balaclavas stormed a McDonald's in Liverpool as they attempted to carry out a robbery in broad daylight.

The two men burst into the fast food restaurant near Switch Island around 9.15 on Sunday morning and jumped over the serving counter to force their way into the office at the back.

They then threatened the manager and a cash delivery guard before stealing the cash boxes from them, the Liverpool Echo reported.

But as they made their escape, one of the men fell over, dropping the cash boxes.

They then drove off in a black BMW, which was later found abandoned in Bootle.

Police said no-one was injured during the attempted robbery, but staff and customers were left distressed by the events.

They also said the men were believed to be carrying some sort of weapon or weapons.

The offenders were described as tall, with their faces and hands covered.

The McDonald's restaurant remains closed while police conduct their enquiries.
