The model Naomi Campbell has been arrested on suspicion of assault.

The 36-year-old was arrested in Westminster at lunchtime yesterday and was being questioned by police last night.

Ms Campbell was arrested after a woman in her forties went to the police, claiming she had been attacked. The Metropolitan Police said that the victim alleged she had been assaulted and sustained scratches to her face and chest.

Ms Campbell, who became a model at the age of 15 and was the first black woman to appear on the cover of Vogue, admitted attacking her aide Georgina Galanis in 2000. Ms Galanis said Ms Campbell assaulted her and threatened to throw her from a car. Ms Campbell pleaded guilty, was given a discharge and took anger management classes.

Her spokesman said last night: "We believe there has been a misunderstanding. Once police have investigated, we are sure this will be resolved satisfactorily."
