An off-duty police officer has been killed this morning in an assault in a Liverpool city centre club.

PC Neil Doyle, a 36-year-old who was based at Eaton Road police station in the city, died in the early hours after he and two other men were assaulted.

Merseyside Police said its officers were called to the Aloha Club in Colquitt Street at 3:15am after reports of an assault.

The three men were taken to hospital, but PC Doyle died a short time later. The two other men are being treated for facial injuries.

The force said the investigation is still in its early stages and a news conference will be held later. No arrests have been made.

The other two men injured in the incident in which PC Doyle was killed were also police officers, the force said. They have now been released from hospital.
