A 57-year-old man has been arrested on suspicion of murder after the body of a woman was found at a cottage, police said today.

The victim, 46, was discovered with head injuries at the property at the rear of the White Horse public house in Rogate, West Sussex.

She was found at the bottom of stairs at the cottage, where she is thought to have lived, at about 9.30pm last night.

A Sussex Police spokesman said: "A post mortem will take place later today in an attempt to establish the cause of death.

"The death is being treated as suspicious at this stage and a murder investigation has commenced."

The spokesman said the woman is yet to be formally identified.

The local man arrested by police is being held in custody.
