A controlled explosion has been carried out on a suspicious vehicle parked outside a mosque in Glasgow. police said.

Police were called to Forth Street Mosque early today and took bomb disposal experts as a precaution.

By 5am the Explosives Ordnance Disposal had carried out a controlled explosion on the vehicle.

Strathclyde Police said it will now be taken away for detailed forensic examination.

Police said there was no need to evacuate local residents but Forth Street, in the Pollokshields area, was closed and a cordon remains in place.

A spokeswoman said police hope to remove the cordon as soon as possible in an effort to minimise disruption to residents and the travelling public.

A police spokeswoman said: "Police would wish to emphasise that there is nothing to suggest any connection between the Mosque and the events over the last few days.

"The force's main priority is public safety and we thank the public for their continued support and co-operation at this time."
