A small explosion behind a Northern Ireland police station caused minor damage today.

The device blew up early this morning near Old Park barracks, north Belfast, destroying perimeter fencing.

Army technical officers were called in and surrounding properties were evacuated.

Dissident republicans have been blamed for several recent attacks on police stations in south Armagh. Bessbrook barracks was shot at on Sunday night but nobody was injured.

Dissidents shot dead two soldiers at Massereene Barracks, Antrim, last March and a police officer in Craigavon, Co Armagh, two days later.

Pc Peadar Heffron had his right leg amputated after a car bomb attack near Randalstown, Co Antrim, earlier this year.
