Forty-one-year-old man arrested on suspicion of murder released on bail

A man arrested after the body of a 16-year-old girl was found in a derelict building in Salford has been released on bail.

The girl discovered early Monday morning inside the boarded-up property in the Kersal area has been named as Sarah Goldman, a pupil at King David High School.

In a statement, the school paid tribute to the teenager. “Sarah was a lovely, bright, intelligent and well-mannered pupil and she will be hugely missed by everyone at school,” it read.

Greater Manchester Police were called at around 9.25am on Monday to reports that the teenager was missing from her home in Prestwich, Bury. At around 9.45am, officers received a second call saying she had been found dead in an empty building just off Brookside Drive.

She is believed to have been found hanged inside by a family member, according to the Manchester Evening News.

Later on Monday, a 41-year-old man was arrested on suspicion of murder. On Tuesday, a force spokesman said the man had been released on bail.

Police said they were keeping an “open mind” about the circumstances of the girl’s death. Greater Manchester Police’s Superintendent Caroline Hemmingway said: “We are currently investigating the tragic death of a 16-year-old girl in Kersal, and it is our top priority to find out exactly how she died.

“We have arrested a man in connection with the girl’s death. However, we are still keeping an open mind and will be exploring all avenues.

“The investigation is still in its early stages and a scene remains in place in the building near to Brookside Drive.

“We would like to hear from anyone who heard or saw anything unusual this morning around Brookside Drive to get in touch as soon as possible. We are trying to piece together this puzzle and help give the girl’s family the answers they deserve.”
