A 62-year-old was being questioned by police last night after a shooting at a solicitor's office left a man fighting for his life.

Officers were called to St John's Street in Devizes, Wiltshire, at about 3pm yesterday to reports of a shooting.

A man was discovered with a gunshot wound to his head after being shot at the offices of Morris, Goddard and Ward.

A suspect seen driving away from the offices was arrested by armed police in the village of Rowde 40 minutes later.

The local community had been left "understandably shocked by the events and we appreciate their co-operation", a police spokeswoman said.

She added: "A weapon we believe to have been used in the incident has been recovered."

A number of roads around the Market Place in Devizes were cordoned off by police, who said it would remain closed while its major crime investigation team examined the scene.

"All thoughts and prayers with the victim of the tragic shooting today in Devizes, and his family," said Claire Perry, Conservative MP for Devizes.

She added: "What an awful, shocking thing to happen."
