Two men have been arrested after a car which sped away from a police patrol smashed into a house.

Both suspects were detained in a field near Caunton, Nottinghamshire, after a Peugeot 306 crashed into a property in the village shortly after 1am today.

Nottinghamshire Police said the vehicle had previously been stopped by officers on the A616 at Muskham, near Newark, but the driver sped off after pulling over momentarily.

The car then struck a house in Mill Lane, Caunton, crashing through the front wall of the building into the lounge.

A police spokesman said: "The occupants of the house were in bed at the time and uninjured, but there has been extensive damage to the property, along with a Peugeot 206 car which was parked on the driveway."

The occupants of the car fled the scene, but two men aged 22 and 20 and from the Retford and Newark areas respectively, were detained nearby after a search operation involving dog-handlers and a police helicopter.
