Two bodies were found at a house in Barnstaple following a fire, police have said.

Firefighters made the discovery at Ford Mead Close on Sunday morning, Devon and Cornwall Police said.

An injured man was rescued from the house by fire crews and taken to North Devon District Hospital.

The deaths are being treated as unexplained and police are investigating how the fire started and how the man became injured, the force said.

The bodies have not yet been identified and no arrests have been made in connection with the incident.

Superintendent Richard Baker, of Devon and Cornwall Police, said: "This is a very early stage in the police inquiry and we are still trying to piece together the series of events which preceded this tragedy.

"We are still in the process of identifying the two bodies, how they came to be there and notifying the two deceased's next-of-kin.

"This is a very unusual incident and we appreciate that the local residents have concerns - we will be placing high visibility patrols in the area for the time being as a reassurance measure."
