Victoria Beckham was concerned but remained calm after security guards tackled an intruder carrying a petrol can inside the grounds of the home she shares with husband David.

The man scaled a 7ft wall at the superstar couple's home in Hertfordshire and was heading for the main buildings when he was approached.

Guards said he was ranting about the England captain, and police confirmed a 38-year-old had been arrested on suspicion of carrying equipment to damage the mansion.

Victoria, 30, was alone with children Brooklyn and Romeo in her home - dubbed "Beckingham Palace" - at the time of the incident on Sunday night.

Her spokesman said a team of five guards apprehended the man before police officers and a helicopter arrived at the scene.

Police said the suspect, from Harlow, was arrested on suspicion of possessing a controlled drug and an article to cause criminal damage.

He was released on police bail to return to Hertford police station on September 24.

Victoria was informed of the breach by security guards and is said to have remained calm.

Her spokesman said the former Spice Girl was not frightened by what happened.

"She doesn't really know much about what happened, or about the man who did this, so we will wait to hear more from the police," he added.

"What was worrying is that we understand the man was carrying drugs and other items to attack the house and he clearly knew he was at the home of the Beckhams."

The security system at the couple's home in Sawbridgeworth is thought to have caught the intruder on CCTV camera and triggered a direct link to local police.

A Hertfordshire Police spokesman confirmed that the man was found in the grounds of the 24-acre estate by staff at around 8.20pm and questioned at a nearby station.

Mrs Beckham's spokesman added: "David and Victoria are now used to this kind of incident and are very happy with their security.

"On their recent holiday in France there was a problem with two people who were arrested on their land."

David, 29, was away from the house as he is in Spain preparing to begin pre-season training with his club Real Madrid.
