The singer Amy Winehouse wept in court yesterday as her husband was remanded in custody, charged with conspiracy to pervert the course of justice.

Blake Fielder-Civil, from Camden, north London, and Anthony Kelly, 25, from Chalk Farm, north London, appeared at Thames Magistrates Court in east London yesterday, where they were both remanded in custody until 23 November.

District Judge John Perkins ordered Mr Fielder-Civil to attend Snaresbrook Crown Court on that date as a tearful Ms Winehouse, who was joined by her father and Babyshambles singer Pete Doherty in the public gallery, looked on.

Ms Winehouse blew her husband kisses and repeatedly mouthed "I love you" to him during the proceedings as he turned to smile at her but, when the judge ruled, she looked away, apparently distraught.

Three other men have also been arrested in connection with the case, and two of these have been released on police bail while the third remains in police custody.

Mr Fielder-Civil was arrested on Thursday on suspicion of perverting the course of justice in relation to a court case which was due to start on Monday. He was to stand trial on charges of causing grievous bodily harm with intent, charges he denies.

The case was brought after James King, a barman, was assaulted at the Macbeth pub in north London in June. It is claimed that Mr Fielder-Civil and a second man offered the alleged victim £200,000 to withdraw from being a witness at the trial, which could now be delayed.

Police, who were tipped off about the alleged plot by a national newspaper, broke down the door to the couple's home on Friday to conduct a search as part of their investigation, but neither was there at the time.

Officers later arrested Mr Fielder-Civil at an address in east London, where Ms Winehouse told him she loved him before he was led away in handcuffs.

Last month, the couple were arrested and held for a night in Norway in connection with marijuana possession.
