A woman appeared in court today charged with concealment of birth after the remains of four babies were found.

Police found three of the newborn children last September at the former home of Bernadette Quirk in Harlow Close, St Helens, Merseyside.

The corpse of a fourth baby was found shortly afterwards in the grounds St Helens Cemetery.

Quirk, 55, wiped tears from her eyes during today's short hearing before St Helens magistrates where she spoke only to confirm her name and address.

She was bailed to appear at Liverpool Crown Court for a preliminary hearing on September 13.
