A woman was shot dead less than half a mile from the Emirates Stadium this morning, as football fans made their way to Arsenal’s match against Burnley.

The woman, who has not been identified, was shot inside a property in nearby Loraine Road at about 9.30am.

Police officers arrived to find her with “serious injuries” and called paramedics but she died before being taken to hospital.

“First aid was administered by officers until the arrival of London Ambulance Service and London's Air Ambulance, however the woman was later pronounced dead at the scene,” a Metropolitan Police spokesperson said.

“Whilst officers believe they know who the deceased is, not all next of kin have been informed.”

A 38-year-old man was arrested on suspicion of murder and has been taken into custody at a north London police station.

“At this early stage it is believed the arrested man and the woman are known to each other,” a spokesperson said.

A gun has been recovered and will be examined by forensics experts.

Loraine Road was closed to traffic after the shooting but it has now reopened in both directions. Travel to and from the Emirates Stadium should not be affected.
