Wood Green shooting: Pair were not the 'intended targets' say police

Detectives now believe that they were likely to have been 'innocent bystanders that were not known to each other'

A man who was shot dead and a woman who was injured in a rush-hour shooting in Haringey, north London were not the 'intended targets', police have said.

Detectives now believe that the 42-year-old man, named locally as Erdogan Guzel, and the 51-year-old woman who was critically injured were likely to have been “innocent bystanders that were not known to each other”.

A post-mortem examination yesterday found that Mr Guzel, who was pronounced dead at the scene, was killed by a gunshot wound to the chest. The woman remains in hospital in a critical condition.

No arrests have yet been made and detectives from the Homicide and Major Crime Command continue to investigate the incident and appeal for further information.

A murder investigation was launched after police were called to the double shooting in Lordship Lane, Wood Green just before 6pm on Friday during the evening rush hour.

Mr Guzel was shot outside Bros Bakery where eye witnesses said he would often sit. He was pronounced dead at 7:05 pm.

Imam Sumbal, a friend of Mr Guzel’s cousin told the Evening Standard: “He was in the wrong place at the wrong time. The bullet was not meant for him.”

Mihir Yurdakul, 35, who was sat with Mr Guzel when he was shot said: ”They just started shooting - they didn't care who was there. They were just shooting everywhere from a machine gun.”

Eyewitnesses have said that the gunman pulled up to the street in a car, spraying bullets from a machine gun in a matter of seconds.

Other witnesses said that they had to dive onto the floor to escape the bullets.

Mr Guzel, who has a son and a daughter aged between 15 and 16 both currently on holiday in Turkey, was described by Yurdakul as a “good guy” who was “working hard for his family.”
