The radical preacher wanted in connection with the acid attack on two British teenagers in Zanzibar has reportedly handed himself into police.

Sheikh Issa Ponda Issa had gone on the run after being shot in the shoulder with a tear-gas canister as he evaded officers in Morgoro, about 120 miles from the capital, Dar es Salaam.

Police in Tanzania had earlier in the day admitted they were no closer to finding the men who attacked Kirstie Trup and Katie Gee, both aged 18 and from north London.

Faustine Shilogile, a police commander, said: "This is a serious police investigation and we are doing everything we can."

The women continue to be treated for burns at the Chelsea and Westminster Hospital. The pair were on the last week of a trip working as volunteer teachers in Zanzibar before flying home.
