Gavin Ewart was born on 4 February 1916. His two major collections are Collected Ewart 1933-1980 and Collected Poems 1980-1990 (both Hutchinson). His most recent, 85 Poems, was published last year. He served in the Royal Artillery in North Africa and Italy from 1940 to 1946. This poem appears in The Terrible Rain, an anthology of war poetry 1939-1945, edited by Brian Gardner (Methuen, pounds 6.99). All this week, The Daily Poem features poetry from the Second World War.
