THOUSANDS of holidaymakers were stuck in motorway queues dozens of miles long yesterday at the start of the August bank holiday. The RAC said: 'If you don't want a repeat experience, we strongly advise you to avoid coming back on Monday afternoon.'

A 35-mile southbound stretch of the M5 into Somerset became jammed and there were hold-ups on roads to holiday spots in North Wales, the east and south coasts of England and in the North-West.
