A helicopter crew delivered a baby boy at 1,000ft after his mother did not make it to hospital in time from her remote island home.

The woman was airlifted from Unst, Britain's most northerly isle, and the helicopter was on the way to the nearest maternity ward in Shetland.

The 7lb boy was delivered by winchman paramedic Marcus Wigfull at 6.30am today, 10 minutes before landing at the Lerwick hospital.
