Baby dies after cardiac arrest

By Mark Bulstrode, PA

An eight-week-old baby died after suffering a cardiac arrest in a busy shopping centre, paramedics said today.

Emergency services were called to Chapelfield, in Norwich, at about 7.55pm yesterday.

Police said the boy died in hospital a short time later.

An ambulance service spokeswoman said: "We were called by security staff to reports that an eight-week-old baby was in cardiac arrest outside the HMV store in Chapelfield Shopping Centre.

"The baby was being worked on by a community first responder.

"Paramedics attempted to resuscitate the baby as he was taken to hospital."

Police said the death was being treated as unexplained and further investigations were being carried out.

Chapelfield was open for late night shopping at the time.

A spokeswoman for the shopping centre said the baby's parents had raised the alarm.

"A young baby was taken ill, the parents alerted staff and Chapelfield first aiders responded immediately.

"The paramedics and police also attended very quickly and were assisted by the on-site team. The baby was taken to hospital. Police confirmed at midnight that the baby had sadly died."
