Britain’s favourite on-screen vehicle has been revealed – and it makes for disappointing reading if you’re a fan of James Bond, comic book heroes – or indeed anything made for the sake of simple entertainment.

Asked to state the most iconic vehicles they could think of from TV and cinema, British adults chose the van from the Coca-Cola adverts above all else.

With such extraordinary and inspiring offerings such as the Batmobile, the Aston Martin DB5 from Skyfall and the Mystery Machine from Scooby Doo making the list, it’s more than a little disappointing that the vehicle most survey respondents chose was essentially an articulated fizzy drinks promotion.

The nonetheless light-hearted study, conducted by the courier quote comparison website GetVan.co.uk, asked more than 2,000 British men and women to name all the vehicles they felt were “among the most iconic in the 21st century”.

It’s also a little bizarre than more than a quarter picked Chitty Chitty Bang Bang – though memorable, the flying car featured in the film of the same name in 1968.

Nick Clarkson of GetVan.co.uk said: “This was a really fun survey to conduct and it was great to sift through the answers to find out the top ten most iconic vehicles; there are some great entries, from childhood nostalgia through to cars we wouldn’t mind having in our own garage – and a few that tick both those boxes.

Not one to be put off by the commercial nature of the winner, Mr Clarkson said: “With the Coca-Cola trucks coming to towns around the UK very soon, we will get the chance to see the UK’s most iconic vehicle in real life! As a nation, we are clearly getting into the festive spirit early this year, especially those with Santa’s sleigh on their minds.”

Santa’s sleigh was picked by 4 per cent of respondents, GetVan.co.uk added.
