New Year revellers will spend more money staying at home tomorrow evening than if they go out to celebrate the beginning of 2011, new research shows.

An increasing number of people plan to spend a night in with family and friends – up from 55 per cent to 72 per cent since 2007, a survey of more than 2,000 adults by Post Office Home Insurance indicates.

Some said the cost of celebrating New Year's Eve was the main reason they were not going out, others blamed bad weather, while one-third simply preferred staying at home.

People partying at home are set to spend an average of £95 each on food and drink, compared with £73 for those planning to go to a club and £57 in a pub.
