Inspectors condemn 'filthy and squalid' unit
Conditions at a youth prison were condemned in a report yesterday as "filthy and squalid".
The prisons inspectorate said one unit at the 160-year-old Portland Young Offenders Institution in Dorset breached health and safety standards and should be demolished. The Rodney Unit had no built-in sanitation and was "unkempt and uncared for", inspectors said. Portland holds 624 inmates aged 18 to 21.
