Jersey votes against move from GMT
Thursday, 16 October 2008
Jersey residents voted against replacing British time with a European model, referendum results revealed today.
Nearly 24,000 of the island's residents went to the polls with more than 72 per cent voting against the move to Central European Time (CET).
The States of Jersey will now make the final decision as the result is not binding.
Before yesterday's referendum business leaders said moving the clocks forward one hour would damage the economy by putting the island out of step with London.
Jersey Finance Limited said it would mean longer hours in the office for workers and 70 per cent of members said they were against any change.
The vote for CET was lead by Senator Jimmy Perchard who claimed an extra hour of daylight would benefit the health of residents, the environment and tourism.
