A tyre fire has broken out across an industrial state in Gravesend, sending black smoke plumes into the sky that are visible from 20 miles away.

More than 70 firefighters and 12 fire engines are tackling the blaze. Roads in the surrounding area have been shut and residents have been warned not to open their windows as a precautionary measure.

Beachgoers in Southend, County Essex said on Twitter they could see the smoke arising from the fire, according to Sky News.

Kent Fire and Rescue said the fire also involved caravans. Three main jets were tackling the blaze.

There have been no injuries reported so far.
