Lorry fire on M25 kicks off bank holiday weekend with two hour-long delays on road
Fire damaged the road surface on section of M25 in Essex and caused it to shut down
Those wishing to get on the road and out of London for the bank holiday weekend could face long delays on the M25 after a lorry fire caused part of the motorway to be shut down, leaving the road surface damaged from the incident.
A section of the M25 in Essex, running anti-clockwise between junction 27 for the M11 and junction 26 at Waltham Abbey, was shut down on Thursday night after a severe lorry fire.
The lorry is understood to have been carrying paint, tyres and paper.
The Highways Agency said the section of road was closed while the “remains of the vehicle” were cut into sections and removed, and while carriageway repair work was carried out afterwards.
The road has since been fully reopened but the Highways Agency has warned that “long delays of two hours remain” in the area.
Drivers have been urged to “check conditions before they set out and plan their journeys to avoid the area if possible,” it said.
