A man's body has been recovered from a river today and the incident referred to the police watchdog, a force said.

Humberside Police said the body of a man was recovered from the River Freshney in Grimsby this morning.

The incident has been referred to the Independent Police Complaints Commission (IPCC), a spokeswoman for Humberside Police said.

Earlier, a member of the public reported hearing "suspicious" noises in the vicinity of Cue World on Victoria Street, Grimsby, and called the police.

Officers attended and at 1.21am a man was spotted on the roof of the building but went out of sight and moments later a figure was seen in the river.

A major search and rescue was launched, involving the fire and rescue service, Coastguard, police helicopter and a marine search unit, Humberside Police said.

The area was cordoned off and later the body of an adult male was recovered from the river shortly before 7am.

"The incident has been referred to the Independent Police Complaints Commission and inquiries are on-going," the police spokeswoman added.
