The identity of the “most romantic guy in London” whose marriage proposal written in candles was spotted by a police helicopter has been revealed.
Police and social media users had been trying to find Utpal Kanbia, 23, after pictures of his engagement went viral.
A Metropolitan Police helicopter was passing over Gladstone Park in north-west London on Saturday night when thermal imaging cameras picked up “will you marry me” written in candles on the grass.
Footage revealed shadowy figures moving around the display, before the soon-to-be happy couple arrived and Mr Kanbia, an electrician from Wembley, got down on one knee.
He and his fiancée, Meena Rabadia, talked exclusively to London Live about their viral engagement.
They told how they had been on a day out when Mr Kanbia suggested a walk to the park where they had gone on their first ever date years before.
“As we got close I saw a group of boys with hoodies on, got scared and wanted to walk away,” Miss Rabadia said.
“But he said no, let’s go and see what it is, let’s check it out.
Utpal Kanbia and Meena Rabadia after their engagement in a London park “We came closer and I was like ‘Oh My God, does that say what it says?’
“And then he got the ring out and I was like, is he going to propose to me?
“And he did, he got down on his knee and he did it the way a man should do it!”
Her husband-to-be said he had a fire extinguisher and water bottles on hand in case the fire got out of hand, joking that he would have doused the flames immediately if his girlfriend said no.
The proposal was caught on camera by a police helicopter “I stalled her twice. I had to go Asda, then Tesco, just so that these guys could light it up for me,” he said.
“I was actually scared when I saw the police helicopter overhead.
“I was nervous, I just wanted to see her reaction.”
The ecstatic couple were unaware that their romantic moment was going viral on the internet as the @MPSinthesky Twitter account shared pictures and appealed for help tracking them down.
Staff who watched the proposal from the air wrote that they were all “very moved”.
“We think we have just seen the most romantic guy in north London,” a tweet read.
The couple told the Evening Standard they are planning an engagement party in November but have not set a date for the big day.
