One motorist died and two others were taken to hospital today after an eight-vehicle crash, police said.

Emergency services were called to the A12 in Ardleigh, Essex at about 6.30am.

An Essex Police spokeswoman said one person had died and a man had been taken to hospital with head injuries.

A woman was also taken to hospital with less serious injuries and there were five "walking wounded", she said.

She said a lorry was one of the eight vehicles involved in the incident on the north bound carriageway, which closed the road.

Ambulance manager Trevor Redburn said: "One patient suffered massive injuries and could not be saved. Sadly, this person was confirmed deceased at the scene.

"A man, thought to be in his 40s, suffered serious head injuries."

Mr Redburn said the patient, who was taken to Queen's Hospital, in Romford, Essex, was believed to be in a "potentially life-threatening" condition.

A woman, thought to be in her mid-20s, suffered cuts to her head and hand and was taken to hospital in Colchester, Essex, he said.

The five "walking wounded" patients were treated at the scene.

"Ambulance personnel worked closely with police and fire crews to manage this complicated incident and ensure everyone involved had the best possible care," said Mr Redburn.

"Our thoughts are with the family of the deceased patient at this very sad time."
