A body has been found in the search for a young British man who went missing in Spain just over three weeks ago.

Nixon Smith, from north Worcestershire, was last seen on 19 November in Madrid airport, from where he had been due to fly to Birmingham.

The 23-year-old’s family launched an emotional appeal earlier this week after he had been missing for 22 days.

“Sadly, officers were informed today a body has been found,” West Mercia Police said in a statement.

“Mr Smith’s next of kin has been informed.”

Mr Smith had been mugged just days earlier and was not travelling with any luggage.

He used an emergency passport to travel from Malaga to Madrid but the document was not used on the second leg of his journey to Birmingham.

The appeal for information included flyers that used the hashtag #HelpfindNixon.

Jake Smith, his brother, thanked the public for their support in a Facebook post.

He had previously described Nixon as a “free spirit”.

“It is with a heavy heart I have to report that Nixon has passed away,” he wrote.

“Full details are not yet known but, we’d appreciate our privacy during this very difficult time.”
