Two people have been killed and eight more injured after a multi-car pile-up in Northumberia.

Four vehicles collided just before 10am on an eastbound stretch of the A69 between Haydon Bridge and Bardon Mill in Northumberland.

Northumbria Police said casualties were taken to hospital following the crash.

The road remained closed in both directions to allow collision investigation to be carried out and for it to be cleared and made safe.

Police said there were motor patrol officers on the roads in the areas of the diversions to try to keep traffic moving.

Anyone who witnessed the collision is asked to contact police on 101.
