Police were today investigating after a two-year-old boy was hit by a train on a level crossing near housing estates.

The toddler died late yesterday following the accident at the crossing in Werrington, Peterborough.

The area was today sealed off as police examined the scene of the tragedy.

The line runs between Lincoln and Peterborough and locals approach the crossing along a footpath.

Locals said many children used the crossing to get to a nearby school.

They said the path ran behind a large housing development and there was also a caravan park nearby.

A police spokesman said the youngster died at around 4pm after being hit by the 14:41 Lincoln to Peterborough train.

A local said today that concerns had been raised about the safety of the crossing.
