Prince Andrew has been carrying out government trade missions despite stepping down as the UK's special representative for trade six months ago, it was reported last night.

The Duke of York, pictured, gave up his role as special representative for trade and investment last July after the controversy surrounding his friendship with American financier Jeffrey Epstein, a sex offender.

But since relinquishing his position, he has attended 17 engagements in Saudi Arabia and China on behalf of the Department for Business, Innovation and Skills. He is also said to have had meetings with the King of Bahrain, the emir of Qatar and the crown prince of Abu Dhabi on trips endorsed by a Cabinet committee.

The reports come just days after Prince Andrew hosted a reception for UK trade delegates, including Chancellor George Osborne, at the World Economic Forum in Davos.

The Duke's judgement was often questioned during his years as a special representative. He held meetings with the son of the former Libyan leader Col Muammar Gaddafi and also entertained the son-in-law of Tunisia's ousted president, Zine El Abidine Ben Ali, at Buckingham Palace.
